Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a quick (nanosecond) physical discharge of static electricity to electronic components and parts. This discharge should be considered as a type of electromagnetic interference. Once an ESD occurs, electronic components lose balance and generate a shock within the circuit. The voltage storms inside the circuit drastically affect the stability of the telecommunication signals, resulting in the system either losing its function or being completely damaged, which in turn seriously affects the reliability and quality of the product.
Because ESD may produce instantaneous large currents, which lead to instantaneous heating or even melting of transistors and chip parts in electronic equipment, ESD immunity is of utmost importance. Therefore, with the advancement of electronic circuit technology, the application of ESD immunity testing in production and design has become widely popular and the implementation of ESD immunity test has become an important part of the basic infrastructure of modern electronic products.

ESD test is an important part of the anti-static discharge performance of electronic components, which directly reflects the reliability and quality of the system. Therefore, understanding the configuration, principles, and protection recommendations of ESD test is very important. When conducting ESD tests, the ground wire of the electrostatic gun should be connected to the reference ground board (the reference ground board is connected to a safety ground), and the EUT should be placed on the reference ground board (using a desktop or 0.1m high stand), and the head of the electrostatic gun should be directed at parts of the EUT that can be touched by the hands or horizontal coupling board and vertical coupling board, which determines the ESD test which is mainly based on common mode immunity. Because ESD will ultimately flow to the reference ground board.

The principle of ESD interference can also be explained from two aspects: when the electrostatic discharge phenomenon occurs in the part of the EUT being tested, the ESD discharge current will also be generated, and the rise time of the analysis of these ESD discharge current waveforms will be less than 1 ns, which means that ESD is a high-frequency phenomenon; secondly, the ESD current path is not only determined by the actual connection relationship inside the EUT, but also affected by distributed parameters.
For ESD immunity testing, there are some special technical requirements, such as: the spacing between the test probes should be 0.3mm-8mm, the measured ground resistance value should be between 2Ω-8Ω, the voltage amplitude. The angle and number of transmissions should meet the standards of CAN / ISO / TS / IEC-61000-4-2: 2012, frequency of 1.5 KHz, the maximum measured RF current within 100A, the maximum set lightning voltage of 2.5 kV; the set operating voltage value cannot exceed 50V, and the built-in capacitor of the device must have a voltage decoupling value of no less than 2.5V. In addition, when the bond-type test is performed, the distance between the electrostatic tester head and the product surface should be 0.3mm; when the coupling-type test is performed, the distance between the product surface and the head of the electrostatic discharge gun should be greater than 0.3mm, but less than or equal to 8mm.
The aforementioned are technical requirements related to ESD protection. Applying the aforementioned design-level protective measures is highly important in improving the ESD-resistance of devices. However, a considerable amount of experience and technical know-how is still required to further optimize ESD protection design and testing methods, which is one of the main reasons why ESD immunity testing is a technically-challenging task.
In sum, ESD immunity testing is simply a residual strategy following ESD protection design, and implementing the aforementioned techniques in actual designs can greatly improve the ESD resistance of the equipment.
