How you can properly conduct a Glow Wire Test

Security is critical in the home appliance business. The purpose of fire safety rules is to assess and rate the flammability of materials used in appliance wiring systems. This is owing to the possibility of human error, over-current, or short circuit failures in a wiring system for an appliance.

One such rule that is now in use in the appliance industry is the glow wire test. This regulation is maintained by employing LISUN’s glow wire testing device to execute a glow wire test method.

Glow wire test

Glow wire testing is an electrical safety test used to determine how flame resistant plastic materials used in electrical equipment are. Its goal is to prevent fires caused by overheated or electrically charged elements, which could ignite the plastic material. This could happen in normal use, reasonable abnormal use, product malfunction, or failure. The glow wire represents an overheated component that makes touch with plastic materials.

The Glow wire tester is designed to test lighting lights, electrical items, and household appliances for resistance to anomalous heat and fire. It features a steel frame coated with a high-temperature coating and an imported instrument display, as well as simple operation and consistent performance.

The glow wire testing equipment can be used to conduct flame resistance tests at all levels of quality control departments and businesses.

Both direct and indirect flame glow-wire test methodologies are available for glow wire tests. The direct flame approach is supported by the UL 94 standard. A flame is applied directly to an object, that is placed either vertically or horizontally, in this long-accepted test procedure.

This is done under controlled conditions. The indirect flame approach, on the other hand, heats a sample with a non-flaming heat source. Glow wire testing is used to show the indirect flame method. These tests can be used to compare the materials’ abilities to resist ignition, self-extinguish flames (if they do ignite), and not spread fire through dripping.

Glow-wire test apparatus:

LISUN equipment is state-of-the-art glow-wire testing instrument. Its technology enables temperature adjustments to be made continuously between 500 and 1000 degrees Celsius. The temperature has a 3°C resolution and is accurate to within 1°C.

The glow wire test gadget assesses the fire danger provided by thermal stress induced by heat sources such as hot components or overload resistors in a short amount of time using simulation technology. It’s part of a line of electrical and electronic component fire hazard testing equipment.

It can be used to determine the flammability of electrical equipment, as well as solid electrical insulating materials and other solid flammable materials, as well as their light-off temperatures.

Working principle of glow wire

The purpose of the glow wire tester is to simulate that parts of the insulating material or other solid combustible materials that can easily spread the flame inside the device may ignite due to the glow wire or glowing element.

The principle is that a nickel-chromium wire with a specified material of 4 mm is heated to the specified temperature (300 °C-1000 °C) with a large current, and the sample is scalded at the specified pressure (1.0N) for 30 seconds.

To measure the fire hazard of the final electrical and electronic equipment, determine whether the test object and bedding ignite or hold the time; when the test is done, record the glow time, flammability index (GWFI), ignition time (Ti) and flame extinction time (Te).

What is the use of this test?

In a short period of time, the glow wire tester uses simulation technology to assess the fire hazard caused by thermal stress induced by heat sources such as hot components or overload resistors. It is one of a series of fire hazard test equipment for electrical and electronic components.

It can be used to assess the flammability and light-off temperatures of electrical equipment, as well as solid electrical insulating materials and other solid flammable materials.

Testing Standards

Glow-wire testing equipment of LISUN is according to international standards. The equipmentaccording to IEC60695-2-1, IEC60695-2-10, IEC60695-2-11, IEC60695-2-12, IEC60695-2-13 (GB/T5169.10, GBT5169.11, GBT5169.12, GB/T5169.13) < basic testing methods of Glow wire, basic testing methods of Glow wire device>, UL 746A, IEC829, DIN695 and VDE0471.

Glow wire test procedure

The glow wire test entails heating an element to a certain temperature. The heated element is referred to as the glow wire. Tissue paper is placed precisely beneath the sample to be studied, securing it in place. The element is pressed into a sample material for 30 seconds at a force of 1N after reaching the appropriate temperature.

If it catches fire, keep track of how long it burns, how high the flame gets, and whether the substance droplets ignite the tissue paper. Both finished items and raw material test plates can be used for glow wire testing.

GWT

GWT is used to perform a glow wire test on an end product. The results of the glow wire test process will be either pass or fail at a certain temperature. The sample must not burn up or self-extinguish in 30 seconds after being withdrawn from the heating element to pass the test. Furthermore, if the specimen spills, the tissue paper may not be ignited.

GWFI

Glow wire flammability index is abbreviated as GWFI. This has to do with the end product’s raw material. The glow wire test on a test plate composed of a certain thickness of raw material demonstrates this. The glow wire flammability index is a glow wire testing procedure that tells the greatest temperature at which the material does not ignite or self-extinguishes within 30 seconds of removing the hot element.

GWIT

Glow wire ignition temperature is abbreviated as GWIT. This is a property of the raw material that was used to create the product. This is accomplished by executing a glow wire test on a test plate made of a specified raw material thickness. The glow wire ignition temperature is a glow wire test that reaches the lowest temperature possible. When the heated element touches the test plate at this temperature, the material catches fire and burns for more than 5 seconds.

Applications

Lighting equipment, low-voltage electrical appliances, household appliances, machine tool appliances, motors, power tools, electronic instruments, electrical instruments, information technology equipment, electrical connections and paving, and other electrical and electronic products and components are all suitable for research. Insulating materials, engineering plastics, and other solid combustible materials businesses can all benefit from the manufacturing department.
