Are you aware of the working of a Surge Generator

Meta Description

Surge generators are important equipment for performing surge tests. We have written a detailed article on surge generators to ease your confusion.

Combination wave/surge Generators are the heaviest equipment. Ground planes with connections to earth are required to operate the generator in EM test environments safely. These generators are required to meet IEC/EN 61000-4-5_ANSI (IEEE) C62.41 and all the other conducted immunity standards of a surge test.

The LISUN Store stocks all the types of combination wave/surge generators for compliance and pre-compliance testing. You can hire or purchase these generators for the individual tests or the multifunction generators to complete an assortment of tests in a compact solution. Most systems are upgraded to include the additional test as per the requirements.

Working of a Surge Generator

Once you get it, you need to verify all the accessories, mains cable, supply cable, plug adapter, manual and calibration certificate. Before turning on the generator, confirm the short-circuit plug is inserted in the safety circuit. If using an external CDN, switch this plug to see; otherwise, leave it.

Plug-in mains cable and properly ground the generator to one of the ground connections on the rear or front side of the unit. Plugin the UT supply cable to the line input on the rear of the unit to power your UT. Connect the eut to the CDN by power plug or the banana jacks on the front or rear side.

Switch the power on and wait for the generators to start up. Push the surge on/off button, so the light is off. You can also use a memory button to recall up to 32 programmable settings or use a dial in a variable mode to set the desired parameters. Push the charging voltage button and use the dial to adjust the voltage from 100 volts to 4.4 kV. This button allows you to adjust the phase angle.

The number button will adjust the number of trigger pulses per test cycle for a single pulse. Turn the knob until the display is blank. The period button will adjust the test period from 10 to 999 seconds. Choose from positive, negative or alternating polarity. Here, you can choose the coupling mode. When you have the required settings push the surge on/off button so the light is on.

Now, push the charge button to start the surge test. Notice the number of pulses in the display will decrease with every pulse. Press the discharge button to pause the test. Press charge to continue the test. Press discharge twice to stop and reset the test.

surge generator

The SG1000-5 surge/wave generator is also known as lightning surge immunity test, combination wave generator, surge current generator/surge voltage generator, combined surge voltage and current generator.

The SG-61000-5 surge generator provides a common basis for evaluating the resistance of power cords and the internal connectors of multiple types of equipment to a high energy transient interference. This high energy interference is caused by a natural lightning surge induction and a large capacity load switching. It fully meets the IEC 61000-4-5, EN61000-4-5 and GB/TI17626.5 standards.

Construction

Surge test

The 6kV surge generator is a small wooden box, and the equipment is a small desktop surge generator. 10kV and above is a large wooden box, and the equipment is a grandfather generator. The wooden box also contains a small accessory box. The coaxial line is used to connect the oscilloscope to view a surge waveform. The sample input line connects the isolation transformer to the surge generator. The sample output line connects the surge generator to the sample.
• Grounding line
• Power cord

The surge generator must be used together with an isolation transformer.
An instantaneous large current pulse will be returned during the surge test. The isolation transformer is used to protect the system and power on the sample. The sample box is optional. It is used to protect the operator. The sample is placed in the sample box during the surge test.
Interestingly, LISUN can customise different size sample boxes according to your samples.

Installation

• A wooden table is needed according to the standard. Take out all the hardware and accessories.
• The surge generator system does not need to be installed. It only needs a wire connection.
• The method of using the surge generators with different voltage outputs is the same.
• Connect the sample through the sample box. If there is no sample box, you can directly connect the sample.
• Connect the power cords of the transformer and the surge generator to the power source.
• The other ports of the generator do not need to be connected.

How does the generator surge up and down?

video

Surging is caused by fuel problems. It usually happens because of incorrect fuel, low fuel levels, or poor fuel quality. Most generators have specific fuel requirements. They use any fuel outside those parameters that can cause operational issues, including surges.

Can we use electronics on the generator?

Yes, we can use the electronics on the surge generator. Most importantly, the surge generators ensure that power does not surge through the circuit. The power coming out of the circuit is safe.
