Detailed Guide on Dust Testers and Dust Test Chambers

IEC Certified Dust Test Chambers Are Correct Dust Testers

Introduction

Dust is intrusive contamination that can influence electronics and some other forms of equipment or machinery to overheat and malfunction. The manufacturer can verify their devices can withstand dusty surroundings by becoming well-sealed or undisturbed through such contamination by using the dust tester provided by different Dust Test Chamber manufacturers.

Components of Dust Particulates

1. Chemically Inert Particles

At relatively low humidity levels, inert hygroscopic particles begin to absorb moisture as well as any harmful surrounding vapors. In this case, the particles serve as carriers for the electrolytes, which speeds up the corrosion process and increases the corrosive impact.

2. Chemically Active Particles

These particles can come from natural or artificial processes, and when dissolved, they can produce caustic electrolytes. Aluminosilicate is the dominant contributor of several clays, including nature-based dust, which causes alkaline reactivity. At the same time, sulfate ions are the major cause of dissolved salts in the soil, which causes acidic reactions.

3. The Contamination Of The Insulator Surfaces

Contamination of the insulator surfaces is as follows
Due to lack of moisture, dust, and sand commonly accumulated on insulating surfaces. On the other hand, the moisture content causes the soluble particles to dissolve and electrolytes to develop. The leakage currents running through the surfaces of contaminated—insulators could be many times larger than ones running via clean, dried insulators.

4. Impact Of Humidity

Sand, as well as dust, may operate as physical factors, chemical content, or both in causing the erosion of products or equipment materials, according to a study.

Dust particulate and fine sand, in combination with other atmospheric conditions such as humidity, can cause the initiation and intensification of complex metal corrosion by sticking on its surface.

What is the IP rating for Solid Part Protection?

An IP rating’s main number denotes a product’s degree of security from hazardous components access, including solids foreign body entry. On a range of zero to 6, solid security is rated. A “0” rating indicates that the device has no protection for solid items and no way to keep them out.

The resistance of an item to the entrance by a foreign source, ranging from fingers to finer tools, is represented by rankings 1-4. A critical safety rating determines how well a device protects against accidental contact with electricity. Whether you have kids or animals, and IP3X rating is a bare minimum, whereas an IP4X rating protects from external interaction for grain-sized and bigger objects.

A product’s security against dangerous dust or any other fine particulates such as sand is determined by an IP5X or IP6X mark. These represent the 2 commonly prevalent Single Particle Security ratings, and they indicate how well a device protects electronic components from dust.

IP5X indicates that a product is dust-resistant. Although dust entrance is not completely avoided, sufficient dust shielding ensures that the product can work in fine dust. Like most consumer applications, a rating of 5 is appropriate.

A classification of IP6X indicates that the product is entirely dust-tight and that no dust can enter. Products having an IP6X rating are preferred by contractors and people traveling to highly unclean or dusty places.

Method of Using Dust Test Chamber

1. Samples Are Pretreated

The samples must be permitted to dry after the moisture test for the dust testing. For over 2 hours, the sample must be exposed to typical atmospheric circumstances. Temperature: 15 °C to 35 °C; relative temp: 45 % to 75%; atmospheric pressure: 8 kPa to 106 kPa

2. Keep The Sample In The Chamber

Place the unpackaged sample in the chamber’s workspace. The sample would not operate on power during the testing unless otherwise specified. The sample mustn’t take up more than 1/3 of the available working space, and even the gap separating samples and equipment is not less than 100 mm.

3. Loading Of Talcum Powder

The proportion of dry talc powder estimated based on the dust test equipment’s capacity / sq.m is 2kg, which can be loaded on the screen.

Important Tip:  Shut the door and double-check that the dust-proof test chamber is completely sealed to keep dust inside the chamber.

4. Experiment with different settings

Press play after choosing the test variables, including the dust blow time, drying rate, and oscillations duration.

5. Replace Talc Powder

After the chamber has been shut down, unlock the bottom panel. The ridge underneath the funnel (the tip of the plate is sealed with a 12.99mm screwed cap, which may be detached with a removable plate) and then evaluated talc powder is discharged.

6. Stop

If such sample’s technical requirements demand intermediary assessment and determination, suspend the dust blow service’s blower just after testing has reached the necessary period and perform the intermediary evaluation to determine.

Suspend the blower and oscillation movement of the blowers if the testing time meets the specifications without interim inspection. Carefully remove the sample and bring it out when the dust has settled.

7. Inspection After The Examination

  1. Determine the amount of dust present and the place where it settles.
  2. Examine elements such as mechanical and electrical qualities following the sample’s technical criteria.

Conclusion

Dust and sand testing is used to develop, evaluate, and assess devices to ensure that they are reliable in the face of atmospheric impacts such as dry sands and dust (fine sand).

Sand and dust experiments imitate the impact of granular material and dust (fine sand) particles as small as 150 microns. Those particles go into cracks, fissures, bearings, and many other connections, creating various damage that leads to device rusting, corrosion and failure.

FAQs

What kind of particulates can be used in a Dust Test?

Dust tests are frequently used with “Arizona road dust.” Surprisingly, this sand or dust is standardized, with four grades. Also, testing procedures need the contaminant to be talcum powders, cement powder, or different fibers.

What kinds of products can we check by the Dust Test Chamber?

We can check electronic and electrical products, electrical cabinets, lamps, automobiles, electrical components, motorcycles, and their parts or other products under simulated dust climate conditions.

What factors, in addition to dust, promote the corrosion process?

Dust’s corrosive potential is greatly amplified when combined with temperature, humidity, and corrosive substances. It is a major focus of current products quality improvement interventions.
