What is the RoHS Test?
You might have heard the term in conversations about compliance RoHS, or the restriction of hazardous substances is a European Union regulation that applies to electric and electronic equipment. The manufacture of these products involves the use of substances that could harm human health or the environment.
It regulates the use of some substances like Mercury, Lead, and Cadmium. RoHS came into effect on 1st July 2006, initially regulating the use of six substances. Its scope expanded in July 2019 to include four new phthalates. RoHS reduces the risk of these ten substances being introduced into the environment as pollutants. In addition to reducing occupational exposure during manufacturing and recycling, immediately eliminating the use of these substances was not practical.
So, regulators introduced exemptions to help phase them out gradually. The exemptions allow manufacturers to identify and replace restricted substances in their products over time. When the exemptions expire, manufacturers can apply for extensions or new exemptions. RoHS has been updated several times since its introduction and will continue to be updated.
Companies in the scope of regulation must continue to monitor the use of restricted substances in their supply chain to ensure compliance.
Method of RoHS Testing
RoHS testing is done for the verification of an electronic component. It makes sure that the component contains excessive ( i.e., above the set limits) amounts of restricted heavy metals, flame retardants, and phthalates. Here’s an overview;

What is an XRF analyzer?
XRF (x-ray fluorescence) is a technique used to determine the elemental composition of the materials. This technique determines the composition of the material by the measurement of fluorescent x-ray. This fluorescent x-ray is emitted from the material when it is excited by a primary source.
In addition, this analyzer is used for the non-destructive analysis of rocks, sediments, and other minerals. XRF test is considered important because it tells you the accurate analysis of the composition of any material. It tells the exact quantity of elements in the material being tested.

Energy dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry
This method was once mainly used to test the geological samples. Today, XRF is the ideal analytical technology for a wide array of materials. Spectrometers using XRF provide elemental analysis that’s fast, efficient, and affordable.
XRF results meet many standards and regulations that you may encounter worldwide. ”How do XRF Spectrometry work?” The instrument begins by sending a beam from its x-ray tube into the sample. When the x-ray hits an atom in the sample, they excite or ionize it. So, the atom ejects an electron from its inner shell.
An outer shell electron drops down to fill the gap. Fluorescence radiation is emitted. The radiation energy is equal to the energy difference between the two electron shells. This energy difference is unique for every element. So, you can identify each element by its characteristic fluorescence radiation.
In an energy-dispersive XRF instrument, the fluorescence radiation from the sample is collected by a semiconductor detector, and the different energies are sorted and then processed at high speed in a multi-channel analyzer. The resulting spectrum shows the number of x-rays counted on the y-axis and the x-ray energy on the x-axis.
Quantification down to ppm level
Modern spectrometers can also be used to determine the concentrations of each element present. An advanced XRF analyzer can calculate results down to several parts per million when you want quantification. Receiving only a few signals from the measured spectrum of a specific element indicates a low concentration while counting many signals indicates a high concentration of that element.
The high sensitivity combined with high count rate capability in any sample allows an analyzer to achieve high precision at short measurement times. In addition, low background combined with high sensitivity will enable it to attain low limits of detection. Today, XRF machines are available in a range of products, from portable handheld XRF guns to high-performance benchtop analyzers.
Conditions for XRF analysis
To ensure accuracy, any analyzer needs the proper sample condition.
• It should be homogenous, with the same mixture of material throughout.
• It should be representative of the material you are trying to analyze for a qualitative result.
• If you have a homogenous sample with a flat surface, you can also test it. Just place it in the sample tray or press the nose of the handheld unit to the surface. This screening analysis should take only a few seconds.
• But for a quantitative test, you may have to prepare the sample. Fill liquids into a sample cup of pulverized solids, and make a pressed pellet or fused bead. This analysis may take a few minutes for accurate results.
• The correct calibration is critical to ensure high accuracy in a quantitative result. The factory for the user may calibrate the analyzer.
