ANSI/IES LM-80-15 standard update content

IESNA Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and ANSI American National Standards Institute jointly issued ANSI/IES LM-80-15 IES Approved Method On June 26, 2015: Measuring Luminous Flux and Color Maintenance of LED packages, Arrays and Modules.

Full Chinese name: LED package, array, module luminous flux and color maintenance test method, and can accept AC constant voltage, DC constant voltage, PWM and other LED packages, arrays, module optics for LM-80 testing and report. The US Energy Star management agency EPA and the US Environmental Protection Agency are also actively collecting opinions from all parties and starting to revise the “IES LM-80 Guidelines for Supporting Energy Star Certification” recently. We will continue to follow up the pace of standard updates to provide good services for LED factories.

Background of issuing ANSI/IES LM-80-15 standard:
Under normal working current and working conditions, LEDs generally have a long working life, which may be 50,000 hours or longer. During the whole life, the light output slowly decays. The spectrum may shift, causing the color and light effects to fail.

ANSI/IES LM-80-15 standard update technical summary:
1. For the measurement of photometric and electrical parameters, please refer to the IES test procedure, ANSI/IES LM-85-14 Approved Method: Electrical and Photometric Measurements of High Power LEDs. The test method can be full integrating sphere, hemisphere or other equivalent structure photometric test methods.
2. The standard describes the lumen maintenance and color maintenance of the luminosity (including luminous flux or radiant flux) of the LED, while increasing the requirements for wavelength changes.
3. The new standard includes three types of lumen maintenance and color change tests. Added LED driving methods, including PWM pulse width modulation current, DC voltage and AC voltage.
4. The test time and interval for life maintenance are no longer specified, and mainly depends on the use of test data.
5. The temperature test requirements are based on the relevant ASTM E230 Table 1 standard requirements.
6. The standard covers luminous flux, radiant flux, photon flux maintenance and color maintenance, including changes in color coordinates, peak wavelength or center wavelength. It allows direct comparison of test data between different test laboratories.
7. The standard lists different Ts temperature monitoring methods, with the lowest temperature monitoring point as a typical monitoring point.
8. The standard specifies requirements for temperature monitoring points for photometric testing, and a report is required.
9. The standard adds a specific description of the failure of the device under test, and the luminosity is reduced by 90% or more, and the lamp is declared invalid.
10. The standard has clearer requirements for temperature control at the Ts and TA points. The Ts temperature must be greater than or equal to the nominal temperature Ts minus 2°C, and the ambient temperature TA must be greater than or equal to TA minus 5°C.
11. The number of Ts temperature points is required. Generally, it’s required at least two temperatures and the environment in which the light source is used is specifically considered. Including one of the two temperatures (55°C and 85°C). The temperature can be different for different driving conditions. However, if the insertion method is used, the driving conditions must be the same according to the requirements of IES TM-21-11+Addendum A:2014.
