Application Research of UL Rain Test Apparatus in Rain Performance Testing of Electrical and Electronic Products

Abstract
Throughout the entire life cycle of electrical and electronic products, waterproof performance in outdoor or humid environments is a critical indicator determining product reliability and safety. This paper takes the LISUN JL-UL UL Rain Test Apparatus as the research object, and based on international authoritative standards such as UL 1598 and UL 60598, systematically analyzes the design principles, core technical parameters, and testing procedures of this apparatus. It focuses on expounding its specific applications in rain performance testing of electrical and electronic products, lamps, electrical cabinets, and electrical components. A test parameter comparison table is constructed to intuitively present the testing conditions for different products, and practical test cases are used to verify the practicability of the apparatus. The research shows that the LISUN JL-UL UL Rain Test Apparatus can accurately simulate rain climate conditions of different intensities. By detecting the physical properties and electrical safety performance of products after exposure to rain, it provides a scientific basis for product design optimization, quality verification, and factory inspection, effectively helping enterprises improve the adaptability of their products in humid environments.

1. Introduction
With the development of electrical and electronic products towards outdoor and multi-scenario applications, the challenges posed by humid environments to products have become increasingly severe. Climate conditions such as rain and spray may lead to the failure of product enclosure sealing, short circuits in internal circuits, and even safety accidents such as fires and electric shocks. To standardize the testing standards for product waterproof performance, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has formulated a series of standards including UL 1598 Standard for Safety of Luminaires, UL 60598 Luminaires – Part 1: General Requirements and Tests, and UL 508 Standard for Safety of Industrial Control Equipment. These standards clearly require that electrical and electronic products must pass water spray tests of specific intensities before they can be marketed.

Against this background, professional UL Rain Test Apparatus has become a core piece of equipment for enterprises and testing institutions to conduct compliance testing. As a leading enterprise in the testing equipment field, LISUN Group has developed the JL-UL UL Rain Test Apparatus, which strictly complies with UL series standards. It can flexibly adjust test parameters according to the characteristics of different products to achieve accurate simulation of rain environments. This paper will comprehensively analyze the value of the LISUN JL-UL UL Rain Test Apparatus from the dimensions of the apparatus’s design standards, technical performance, and application scenarios, providing practical references for the waterproof performance testing of electrical and electronic products.

2. Design Standards and Technical Principles of LISUN JL-UL UL Rain Test Apparatus
2.1 Core Technical Principles
The LISUN JL-UL UL Rain Test Apparatus adopts the “controllable high-pressure spray” technology, and its core structure consists of a water supply system, a spray system, a sample fixing system, a parameter control system, and a detection system. During the test, first, according to the standard requirements of the product to be tested, the parameter control system is used to set the water pressure (0.05MPa-1MPa), water flow rate (5L/min-100L/min), spray distance (0.5m-3m), and test duration (1min-240min). Then, the water supply system pressurizes clean water to the set pressure through a high-pressure water pump. The water is then delivered to the standard nozzles of the spray system (which can be replaced with different specifications such as 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch) to form a uniform water flow. The water flow sprays the product fixed on the sample rack at a preset angle (adjustable from 0° to 360°). During the test, the detection system continuously monitors the surface humidity, internal insulation resistance, and electrical performance of the sample. After the test, the waterproof performance of the product is comprehensively evaluated by observing whether the product has problems such as enclosure deformation, water ingress, and circuit failure.

The key technical highlight of the apparatus lies in its “multi-dimensional adjustable parameters”: the spray system can adjust the height and angle of the nozzles through a mechanical structure to achieve accurate spraying on different parts of the product, such as the front, side, and top. The water supply system is equipped with a pressure stabilizing valve to ensure that the water pressure fluctuation does not exceed ±5% during the test, avoiding test result deviations caused by unstable pressure.

4. Application Scenarios and Practical Test Cases of LISUN JL-UL UL Rain Test Apparatus
4.1 Rain Performance Testing of Outdoor LED Luminaires
Outdoor LED luminaires (such as street lamps and garden lamps) are exposed to outdoor environments for a long time and need to withstand rain erosion. Their waterproof performance directly affects their service life. When using the LISUN JL-UL UL Rain Test Apparatus for testing, parameters are set in accordance with UL 1598 standard: water pressure 0.3MPa, water flow rate 15L/min, spray distance 1.0m, and 360° rotating spray for 30min.

Before the test, the LED luminaire is connected to a power source (to simulate normal working conditions) and fixed on the sample rack. It is ensured that vulnerable parts of the luminaire, such as wire connection ports and heat dissipation holes, are directly facing the nozzles. During the test, the brightness, color temperature, and current changes of the luminaire are continuously monitored. After the test, the power supply is cut off, the luminaire is disassembled to check for internal water ingress, and an insulation resistance meter is used to measure the insulation resistance between the power terminal of the luminaire and the enclosure. If the luminaire has no traces of water ingress, the insulation resistance is ≥2MΩ, and it functions normally after being powered on, it is judged as qualified. When a luminaire enterprise used this apparatus to test a new type of outdoor street lamp, it was found that there was slight water ingress at the wire connection port of the luminaire. By optimizing the material of the sealing ring (replacing rubber with silica gel), the luminaire fully met the standard requirements after re-testing, effectively avoiding quality risks after the product was launched.

4.2 Rain Performance Testing of Industrial Electrical Cabinets
Industrial electrical cabinets (such as frequency converter cabinets and PLC control cabinets) are often used in factory workshops or outdoor power distribution rooms. They need to resist spray water or rain splashes to prevent short circuits in internal circuits. According to UL 508 standard, when using the LISUN JL-UL UL Rain Test Apparatus for testing, parameters are set as follows: water pressure 0.5MPa, water flow rate 30L/min, spray distance 1.5m, and spraying the front and side (at 90° angle) of the cabinet for 30min each (total test duration 60min).
Before the test, humidity sensors are attached to key positions inside the cabinet (such as circuit breakers and terminal blocks), and the cabinet is connected to a power source and loaded with a simulated load. During the test, the data from the humidity sensors (requiring humidity ≤60%RH) and the stability of the output voltage of the cabinet are continuously monitored. After the test, the integrity of the cabinet door seals is checked, whether the cabinet body is rusted is inspected, and at the same time, the insulation performance and protection functions (such as overload protection and short-circuit protection) of the cabinet are tested. When an electrical equipment enterprise used this apparatus for testing, it was found that the waterproof cover of the ventilation hole on the top of the cabinet was not tightly sealed, leading to rainwater infiltration. Later, by adding a waterproof rubber strip and optimizing the structure of the cover, the waterproof problem was successfully solved, and the protection level of the product was upgraded from IP54 to IP65.

4.3 Rain Performance Testing of Outdoor Electrical Components
Outdoor electrical components (such as outdoor sockets and sensors) are small in size and complex in structure, and their waterproof performance requirements are more stringent. Taking the testing of outdoor sockets required by UL 498 standard as an example, the LISUN JL-UL UL Rain Test Apparatus is used with the following parameters: water pressure 0.2MPa, water flow rate 10L/min, spray distance 0.8m, and spraying at a 45° depression angle for 10min.
Before the test, the socket is inserted into a simulated load (such as a 100W light bulb) to ensure that the socket is in a powered-on state. During the test, it is observed whether the light bulb remains on (no flickering or extinguishing). After the test, the power supply is disconnected, a multimeter is used to measure the resistance between the live wire and neutral wire of the socket (requiring ≥5MΩ), and at the same time, whether there is water accumulation in the socket holes is checked. When an electronic enterprise tested an outdoor sensor, it was found that the signal interface of the sensor had a signal interruption after spraying. By adding waterproof potting glue (epoxy resin material) at the interface, the signal transmission returned to stable after re-testing, meeting the requirements for outdoor use.

5. Product Advantages and Usage Precautions of LISUN JL-UL UL Rain Test Apparatus
5.1 Product Advantages
• Strong Standard Compatibility: The apparatus strictly complies with multiple standards of UL, IEC, and China, and can meet the testing needs of products in different countries and regions, avoiding repeated purchases by enterprises due to equipment incompatibility. For example, when testing products exported to the United States, UL standard parameters are adopted; when testing products exported to Europe, parameters can be switched to IEC standards, with convenient operation.
• High Testing Accuracy: The control accuracy of parameters such as water pressure, water flow rate, and test duration is better than standard requirements. Among them, the water pressure accuracy is ±0.02MPa, and the water flow rate accuracy is ±2%, ensuring the repeatability and accuracy of test results. The error rate can be controlled within 3% when testing the same product multiple times.
• Convenient Operation and Maintenance: It adopts touchscreen visual operation and supports Chinese-English interface switching. New users can master basic operations within 30 minutes. The wearing parts of the equipment (such as nozzles and sealing rings) are easy to replace without the need for professional technicians, reducing the maintenance cost of enterprises. At the same time, the apparatus is equipped with a water quality filtration system, which can effectively prevent nozzle clogging and extend the service life of the equipment.
• Strong Expandability: Additional functions can be customized according to user needs, such as a low-temperature environment simulation module (-20℃-50℃) to realize combined environment testing of “low temperature + rain”; or a high-definition camera can be equipped to record the test process in real time, facilitating subsequent analysis and traceability.

5.2 Usage Precautions
• Strict Water Quality Control: Deionized water (resistivity ≥1MΩ·cm) must be used for testing. If tap water or water containing impurities is used, it is easy to cause nozzle clogging and sensor failure, and may also form scale on the sample surface, affecting the judgment of test results. It is recommended to replace the filter element every quarter to ensure that the water quality meets the standards.
• Standard Sample Installation: Samples must be fixed in accordance with their normal use conditions to avoid spray angle deviations caused by inclined or loose installation. For example, when testing lamps, it is necessary to ensure that the installation method of the lamps is consistent with the actual outdoor installation, and they cannot be placed randomly. At the same time, there should be no obstacles between the sample and the nozzles to ensure that the water flow covers the sample surface evenly.
• Accurate Parameter Setting: Parameters must be set according to the standards corresponding to the product, and cannot be adjusted arbitrarily. For example, when testing lamps in accordance with UL 1598 standard, the water pressure cannot be lower than 0.3MPa, otherwise, the actual rain intensity cannot be simulated. If parameters need to be changed, the reasons for the change and the specific values must be recorded for subsequent traceability.
• Timely Post-Test Handling: After the test, the water source and power supply of the equipment must be cut off immediately. The sample is removed from the sample rack, its surface moisture is wiped dry, and it is placed in a dry environment (humidity ≤50%RH, temperature 25℃±5℃). Performance testing can only be carried out after 24 hours to avoid the impact of residual moisture on the sample surface on indicators such as insulation resistance.

6. Conclusions:
As professional testing equipment that complies with international standards, LISUN JL-UL UL water spray tester accurately simulates rainy weather conditions, providing a reliable solution for testing the water resistance of electronic and electrical products, lamps, cabinets, and electrical components. Its wide range of parameter adjustments, high test accuracy, and convenient operation not only meet the needs of companies for product design optimization, quality verification, and factory inspection, but also help companies meet market access standards in different countries and regions, enhancing the international competitiveness of their products.
