UL 2108:2023 is the ANSI/UL safety standard specially formulated for Class 2 low-voltage lighting systems with a maximum output power of 100 VA, covering complete assemblies including LED power units, bare conductor track lighting, low-voltage light fixtures, connecting wires and matching accessories. It establishes a full set of unified evaluation criteria aligned with North American NEC Article 411 requirements, distinguishing safety demands for damp-location and wet-location installations, and mandating cross-reference to UL 1598 for waterproof, dustproof and structural integrity tests of products marked for wet locations. The standard builds its safety system through multiple mandatory test chapters, covering electrical insulation, grounding continuity, thermal performance, mechanical durability, material corrosion resistance and battery abnormal protection for rechargeable lighting products, to mitigate risks of electric shock, fire, short circuit and mechanical damage under normal and fault operating conditions.
This standard specifies strict standardized test procedures and pass-fail judgment benchmarks for product certification. Core electrical tests include a 1-minute dielectric voltage withstand test with defined AC high voltages between primary circuits, secondary circuits and grounded enclosures, plus a 25 A grounding continuity test limiting grounding resistance to no more than 0.1 Ω. Mechanical assessments contain a 0.91 m drop impact test for polymer lamp housings, while environmental tests cover salt spray corrosion for metal components and temperature-humidity conditioning. For battery-integrated low-voltage luminaires, Clause 81 enforces 7-hour single-fault abnormal charging and reverse-charging tests to avoid battery leakage, explosion or flame ejection, with a mandatory re-test of dielectric withstand after all battery fault evaluations. All test results must demonstrate no dielectric breakdown, excessive temperature, structural fracture or hazardous emission to obtain UL certification compliance for North American market sales.
