How is the salt spray test conducted via LISUN salt spray corrosion chamber

What is a Salt Spray Test?

The salt spray test is a generalized test method used to check the coated samples’ corrosion resistance. During the salt spray test, an accelerated corrosive attack is generated for the prediction of the coated samples’ suitability for use as a protective finish. Salt spray tests are generally used for the production of the rapid comparisons between expected and real corrosion resistance.

What is a Salt Spray Corrosion Chamber?

The Salt Spray Corrosion Chamber is designed to test the corrosion-resistant properties of any metal part, like zinc plated nuts and bolts, surface coating, and paint. These chambers are designed to test the performance of the items placed on their surface after the corrosive protection treatments.

How does the test work?

Tests are being carried out in the closed testing chambers. We apply a salt-water solution to a sample through a spray nozzle. As a result, this produces a corrosive environment of dense saline fog to emulate a corrosive experiment. We evaluate the appearance of corrosion products (oxides) after a period. If the coating is corrosion resistant, it will take more time without showing the signs of corrosion. Tests usually occur between 24 and 1000 hours for certain coatings.

Purpose of the test

• This test is conducted for the evaluation of the galvanized or pre-painted panel for its expected life on exposure to the marine conditions.
• This test is really inexpensive, affordable, and well-standardized. This test has become a popular test because of its quick and accurate results.

Test Methodology

• The panel is subjected to continuous exposure to a 5% salt solution atmosphere under constant pressure and temperature.
• Observations were recorded for the appearance of corrosion of every 250 hrs exposure time interval.
• Corrosion seen as blisters and creep is compared with the standard for severity and density of corrosion.

The criterion of evaluation and acceptance

‘’If the observed corrosion is less than the standards, it is considered PASS.’’ Test specimens are kept in an enclosed salt spray testing cabinet or chamber. Then, they are subjected to a continuous indirect fog or spray of a saltwater solution. The climate is necessarily maintained throughout the duration of the test. Salt spray testing (fog) is famous because it is well standardized and reasonably repeatable.

Uses of Salt Spray Test

Salt spray tests are widely applied in the industrial sector, marine, automotive, aircraft, and military equipment to evaluate the corrosion resistance of parts or finished surfaces.

Coatings provide a corrosion resistance for the metallic parts. Salt fog testing provides an excellent way for testing the permeability of coatings and seals. In addition, the sterling performance offers testing of materials to verify confirmation to the various industry standards.

The ASTM B-117 Salt spray tests standard (and ISO 9227) are the best-used reference standards to determine normal corrosion resistance to ocean water type environments.

Types of Salt Tests

The salt spray test corrosion chamber is capable of doing the following tests

Neutral Salt Spray Test (NSS test)

A Neutral Salt Spray Test is designed for the determination of the qualitative resistance to corrosive attacks on the product surface. This test is specifically conducted for the protective coated products.

It defines the equipment and reagents that should be used for performing the neutral salt spray test (NSS), salt spray acetic (AASS), and cupro acetic salt spray (CASS).

Acetate Spray Test (ASS test)

This test is basically developed on the basis of the NSS test. We add a little amount of glacial acetic acid in a 5% sodium chloride solution during this test. The purpose of doing so is that the PH value of the solution drops to about 3, and the solution becomes acidic. Finally, we have got the formation of salt fog from neutral salt fog to acid.

Salt Spray Test

As already discussed, the salt spray test is a standardized test method used to check the corrosion resistance of the coated samples. The purpose of doing this test is to determine whether the product under test is corrosion-resistant or not.

Why is a salt spray test so useful?

The resistance results of the material or coating to the corrosion in a salt spray tests are useful to determine the strength of a particular fastener or coating for your production needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a salt spray test duration?

This test usually uses a sodium chloride solution with a pH range between 6.5 and 7.2. This test runs from 8 to 3,000 hours. As earlier mentioned, there are a variety of other corrosion tests, and salt spray tests are considered a very standard.

What is the Salt Spray Chamber Test?

Salt spray testing is defined as a laboratory simulation of a corrosive saline environment. We use it as an accelerated means of testing the ability of surface coatings whether they can withstand atmospheric corrosion or not.

How do we perform the salt spray test?

As already mentioned, salt spray tests are conducted in a closed testing chamber. A saltwater solution is applied to the sample through a spray nozzle. A dense saltwater fog is created, which is used for the imitation of a corrosive experiment. After a long period of time, which is dependent on the corrosion resistance of a product, we evaluate the appearance of the oxide.
