UL 696:2020 is a US standard for the safety of electric toys. It aims to ensure the safety of electric toys under normal use and foreseeable abuse. The standard applies to electric toys designed, manufactured, or sold as toys for children aged over 3, powered by a nominal 120 – volt branch circuit. The packaging of the toy (including packaging materials intended for use with the toy) is also considered part of the toy and covered by the standard. However, it does not cover outdoor toys, sewing machines, irons, toys operated by water, toys operated by pressurized gases or liquids, toy transformers, etc.
UL 696:2020 focuses on the electrical safety, mechanical strength, and environmental resistance of electric toys. Its core test items include leakage current tests (under normal and humid conditions), insulation withstand voltage tests (to detect insulation performance under high voltage), short – circuit protection and abnormal condition simulations (such as motor lock – up and thermostat failure), shell strength tests (to evaluate impact and extrusion resistance), material flammability assessments (for shells and internal components), and temperature cycle tests (to examine stability under extreme high and low temperatures). Through these test items, the safety of electric toys is comprehensively guaranteed, providing a reliable safety guarantee for children using electric toys.
