UL 817:2025 Cord Sets and Power-Supply Cords

UL 817:2025 (13th Edition) is the ANSI/UL safety standard for cord sets and power‑supply cords rated up to 600 V, used in non‑hazardous indoor locations per NFPA 70. It covers molded/assembled plugs, connectors, hospital‑grade devices, and cord restraints, excluding temporary outdoor and seasonal lighting cords. It mandates electrical, mechanical, and fire safety tests—such as dielectric withstand, insulation resistance, bending, pull, and flammability—to prevent shock, fire, and injury hazards.

This 2025 update strengthens critical safety requirements: plug housing materials upgraded to UL 94 V‑2 (V‑0 for >16 A devices), improved grounding pin durability (500 insertions), enhanced low‑temperature bending performance, and higher pull‑test loads at cord entries.
