Difference between colorimeter, densitometer and whiteness meter

Everyone’s perception and interpretation of color are very subjective. Different reasons include personal preference, age, eye fatigue and other physiological factors. People’s perception of color, such as nearsightedness and farsightedness, is also different. So the testing instruments required for the measurement of various colors in various industries are also various. First, let’s talk about the colorimeter. Common colors can be “pieced” with red, green and blue primary colors in different proportions. To facilitate the measurement of color, physicists introduced tristimulus values. According to the theory of chromaticity, the color of any colored light can be represented by tristimulus values. The colorimeter is a simple color deviation testing instrument, that is, to make a filter that simulates the light splitting characteristics equivalent to the color sensitivity of the human eye, and use it to measure the light of the sample plate. The key is to design the light splitting sensitivity characteristics of this kind of photoreceptor, and to measure and display the excellent difference value through the computer software under a certain light source. It is a conventional instrument for scientific research and production. Therefore, the working principle of the general color difference meter is that the color difference meter has the function of color data, which can establish color standards and control color quality. With the reflected light of the collected sample as the reference, measure the reflected light tristimulus value of the target sample and the sample to be measured, and determine the color difference between the target sample and the sample to be measured. There is also a spectroscopic colorimeter, that is, a spectroscopic colorimeter. The spectroscopic colorimeter is designed according to the principle of spectroscopic type. It can measure the reflectivity curve at each wavelength, and also accurately measure the L, a, b values, which is more accurate and stable than ordinary colorimeters.

The second is the whiteness meter. The whiteness in GB/T 17749 “Representation of whiteness” refers to the degree to characterize the whiteness of an object. The greater the whiteness value, the greater the degree of whiteness measured. The whiteness meter uses the integrating sphere to measure the absolute spectral diffuse reflectance, thus realizing the whiteness measurement. The whiteness meter is used to measure the blue light whiteness of the object surface. It is applicable to departments that need to measure the whiteness of products such as textiles, printing and dyeing, chemical fiber, plastics, porcelain clay, talc, white cement, paint, paint, ceramics, enamel, paper, pulp, etc.

The third is the densitometer. The densitometer uses the built-in red, green and blue optical filters to measure the light reflection or transmission of yellow, magenta and cyan colors, and calculate the density value. At present, the densitometer is mainly used in the board making industry and various types of printing to help implement comprehensive color control from prepress to workshop.

To sum up, although all three color measuring instruments can be used for color quality control, there are also great differences. The measured values vary depending on the industry used. The colorimeter is used for color difference measurement in almost all fields, mainly measuring the color difference between samples. The whiteness meter is mainly used to measure the whiteness of object surface, and its application scope is narrowed compared with the colorimeter. The densitometer can only measure the density value of printed materials, but does not include the expression of hue. It cannot truly reflect the actual visual effect of color, and its application field is also limited. Therefore, the application of color difference meter is relatively comprehensive.
