IEC 60238:2020 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies uniform requirements for Edison screw lampholders—widely used components for mounting and electrically connecting lamps with Edison screw bases. Officially released to replace its predecessor (IEC 60238:2014), this standard applies to common Edison screw lampholder types, including E14 (small screw), E27 (standard household screw), and E40 (large industrial screw), covering their design, material, and dimensional baseline to ensure global compatibility across different lighting products (e.g., incandescent, LED, and energy-saving lamps).
IEC 60238:2020 focuses on key performance and safety criteria, such as electrical insulation resistance, contact conductivity (typically requiring corrosion-resistant materials like brass for current-carrying parts), and mechanical durability (e.g., withstanding repeated lamp insertion/removal). It also updates test methods for verifying “creepage distances and clearances” to prevent electrical hazards, and adds definitions for specialized types like enclosed reinforced insulation lampholders. By aligning global manufacturing practices, the standard aims to enhance product safety, reduce cross-border compatibility issues, and support the consistent quality of lighting systems in residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
