The Glossmeter, also known as the gloss machine, light measuring device, glossmeter, gloss meter, gloss test meter, gloss tester and gloss measurement instrument, is used to measure the gloss of a surface. It is widely used in chemical raw materials, coating manufacturing, aerospace industry, automobile industry, shipbuilding industry, electronics industry, electrical industry, IT communication and other supporting measuring instruments.

Gloss is a physical quantity that evaluates the ability of the material surface to reflect light under a set of geometric conditions. Therefore, it describes the directional reflective property. According to the characteristics of gloss, gloss can be divided into several categories. Gloss, as we usually refer to, refers to “mirror gloss”. Therefore, the glossmeter is sometimes also called mirror glossmeter. It is different from the concept of “glossness” or “roughness” in mechanical processing industry, which is used to evaluate the tiny unevenness on the surface of material. When selecting high precision glossmeter, we should pay attention to the following points:

I. Range
When selecting high precision glossmeter, the range of glossmeter should be considered. By understanding the approximate range of the gloss of the surface of the measured object, the range can be judged. For example, the gloss of paint surface is within 100GU, so the glossmeter with range 0-200GU is selected; if the gloss of metal products such as plating parts and stainless steel is mostly above 500GU, the glossmeter of 0-1000GU is more suitable.

II. Viewing angle
The glossmeter is divided into 20 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees, 85 degrees and so on. The gloss measured at different angles is different. 60 degrees is suitable for measuring the gloss of most common materials, 85 degrees is suitable for measuring materials with gloss lower than 10GU (measured at 60 degrees), such as leather, paper, etc.; 45 degrees is suitable for measuring ceramics, enamel, etc.; 20 degrees is suitable for measuring coating, paint, etc. with gloss higher than 70GU (measured at 60 degrees).

III. Standard
The high precision glossmeter has higher requirements for accuracy. According to the national metrological verification procedure JJG 696-2015″Glossmeter and Gloss Plate”, the zero error of standard glossmeter should reach ±0.1GU, and the indication error should reach ±1GU. The zero error of the first level working glossmeter can reach ±0.2GU at most, and the indication error can reach ±1.5GU at most. The metrological report of the instrument is especially important. It is advisable to select a brand with relevant certificates of high accuracy glossmeter and select an appropriate working machine according to the national standards.

IV. Function
1. The glossmeter can measure the surfaces of different materials from plastic to metal, and has a wide range of measurement. The gloss range is: 0~200Gu (under the measurement condition of 20 degrees).
2. The gloss difference can be measured by displaying the standard value/sample value or assessing PASS/FAIL, and the PASS/FAIL function can also be realized by setting the limit value.
3. The basic mode and statistical mode can be selected in the mode selection menu for measurement.
4. The angles to be displayed can be selected in the measurement angle interface, and two or three angles can be selected at the same time (MULTI DLOSS 268).
5. Automatic diagnostic function for calibration.
6. The names of standard value and sample value can be input in the measurement results to facilitate identification.

V. Additional functions
Additional functions of glossmeter are also important. For example, whether the glossmeter has temperature compensation function, which can ensure that the luminous efficiency of light source is not affected when the ambient temperature changes; whether it has QC function, which can quickly batch detect whether the gloss of the object is qualified by setting the upper and lower limits.
