IEC 62504:2014 General lighting – Light emitting diode (LED) products and related equipment – Terms and definitions

IEC 62504:2014, titled “General lighting – Light emitting diode (LED) products and related equipment – Terms and definitions,” is the first edition of this international standard published in June 2014 by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It cancels and replaces the previous IEC TS 62504:2011 technical specification, providing a comprehensive terminology framework for LED-based general lighting systems. The standard aims to facilitate common understanding among manufacturers, distributors, installers, and users by defining key terms used in IEC LED standards and industry literature, including both descriptive terms (e.g., “LED light source,” “LED module”) and measurable technical parameters adapted from IEC 60050-845 (e.g., “colour rendering index,” “correlated colour temperature”). It covers the entire LED product lifecycle from chips and packages to complete lighting systems and controlgear.

The core of IEC 62504:2014 lies in its systematic compilation of precise definitions for LED-specific components and systems, addressing the terminology confusion caused by rapid technological advancements in the LED lighting sector. It defines critical concepts such as “LED package” (a single LED chip or multiple chips with encapsulation and electrical connections), “LED module” (an unlampholder LED light source with one or more packages on a printed circuit board), and “LED controlgear” (devices providing appropriate electrical energy to LEDs). Additionally, Annex A offers valuable overviews of LED package design and system configurations combining LED light sources with controlgear. As a foundational standard, it ensures consistency in product design, testing, certification, and global trade, while serving as the basis for national standards worldwide, including China’s GB/T 24826-2016 which adopts it identically. This standard plays a crucial role in promoting technological innovation and market harmonization across the international LED lighting industry.
