EN 71-1:2014 Safety of toys – Part 1: Mechanical and physical properties

EN 71-1:2014 is a European standard that specifies the safety technical requirements for the mechanical and physical properties of toys intended for children under 14 years old. It aims to ensure that toys will not cause harm to children during use.

This standard covers various aspects, including size and shape (to prevent small – part swallowing), sharp edges and corners (to avoid scratches or stabs), mechanical strength (such as drop and durability tests), and the safety of moving parts (like hinge and spring tests). It also has requirements for heat and cold resistance, and stipulates that toys should have appropriate safety warnings and age – related markings. Additionally, it includes specific requirements for toys for children under 36 months, under 18 months, and those too young to sit up unaided.
