The UL44 standard primarily specifies requirements for thermoset-insulated wires and cables, aiming to ensure their safety and reliability. Its scope of application covers single-conductor and multi-conductor thermoset-insulated wires and cables with rated voltages of 600V, 1000V, 2000V, and 5000V, which comply with relevant electrical codes in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The standard sets out detailed provisions for the conductors, insulation, jackets, and other components of wires and cables—such as requirements for conductor material, size, and stranding, as well as physical properties and thickness requirements for insulation. Additionally, it specifies a series of testing requirements, including insulation resistance testing, voltage withstand testing, thermal aging testing, tensile strength testing, and moisture resistance testing. These tests are designed to ensure that the cables meet the standard in terms of electrical performance, thermal stability, mechanical strength, and environmental durability. Cables that pass the tests may be marked with the UL certification mark.
