Benefits and Fundamentals of an Integrating Sphere

Integrating Spheres have a specified sensitivity to beam size and beam divergence. An integrating sphere is an optical instrument for capturing a light beam and measuring the power in the beam under specific conditions.
It is also known as the Ulbricht Sphere and consists of a hollow spherical cavity. The inner surface is covered with a diffuse white reflective coating and the entrance and exit ports.

Light rays incident on any point on the inner surface are, by multiple scattering reflections, distributed equally to all the other points. It may be thought of as a diffuser that preserves power but destroys spatial information. We usually use it with some light source and a detector for measuring the optical power.

High Precision Spectroradiometer Integrating Sphere System LPCE-2(LMS-9000)

A Coblentz sphere differs from an integrating sphere in that it has a mirror-like inner surface rather than a diffuse inner surface. It is more beneficial than the goniophotometer. It measures the light produced by a source that total power is obtained in a single measurement.

Theory of Integrating Sphere

Integrating spheres are optical instruments, as mentioned earlier. We can locate the primary radiation source inside the sphere or at the start of the entrance port. The optical radiation which enters the sphere is considered relevant for the internal radiation distribution of the sphere. The integrating sphere theory presents two important conclusions:

• The irradiance of the inner surface of a sphere is in direct proportion with the total radiant power emitted by a source that either enters the port or is present inside.
• Radiance reflected from the sphere’s inner surface is independent of the location where it occurs. Thus, the sphere’s exit port is considered a perfect Lambertian source because optical radiation occurs through the homogenous radiance and exitance distributions.

Light measurement using an Integrating Sphere

We will demonstrate light measurement using an integrated sphere. Integrating spheres is very useful in optical testing and measurement. The LPEC-2 (LMS-9000) by LISUN is equipped with a photo detector, which is useful for light measurement.

• Connect the hardware set. Confirm that the calibration is correct for the DUT (Device under test).
• Keep the DUT in the sphere powered on and warmed up.
• Click on auto exposure, then click on ”perform single scan”.
• Make sure that the calibration is applied to the measurement.
• All of the measurement metrics and visual data are now available for the review.
• Click the ”save” icon to save the scan.
• Give the scan a name and enter any other information that is necessary.
• It calculates a lot of valuable data and light measurement metrics.
• These include chromaticity data with visual representations and built-in graphs.
• In addition, it includes a variety of color rendering metrics, such as cri and TM- 30.
• It also includes metrics for flicker and horticulture.
• In order to export the scan, navigate to ”export selected data” and the scan data will be exported to csv.
• The csv file can be opened offline for additional processing.
• This file includes all of the calculated metrics, such as luminous flux and all of the color rendering information.
• The raw spectral data are also included. It’s easy to generate the summary report. Click on ”create a report”, choose a report template.
• Enter the required information, and click on ”create”.
• Thus, it is very easy to generate a report.

Test Imaging sensors and cameras of mobile

You can also test the imaging sensors and cameras of your mobile by placing them in front of the integrating sphere. In this case, you will measure the axial and off-axis irradiance.

How do the integrating spheres used for the color measurement?

Color analysis is usually performed with a 150 mm integrating sphere. The reason for that is that many samples are paint-based and typically diffused. Diffuse reflectance implies exploiting a 150 mm integrating sphere. The smaller spheres can be used, but some of the protocols used throughout the industry require large spheres.

Once we set up the method, we can define several components for the color calculation, including the illuminant type and the observer angle. These are typically 10 degrees for the observer angle, and for the luminance d5, sunlight or daylight is generally used.

More extensive calculation capabilities are possible, and we have an additional software package that can incorporate or be extended to include other variables. The sample is placed at the back in the reflectance port. We have to form a percent reflectance measurement from 780 to 380 nanometers. This is a standard wavelength range for color measurements.

The data interval has been set to 10. Press ”run” for the sample, which we have defined to be pure almond. One of the many colors that are available at your local paint store. You will notice the analysis time for color is relatively quick. The key parts of the color analysis really are in the calculations.

Once the sample spectra have been generated, the software will automatically calculate a variety of color coordinates found in many industries. Once we have developed the spectra, we can then use the post-processing parameter section within the Winlab software. This includes the lab values typically found in paint and chrome and also try stimulus values. The Karla software package contains many more versions of this analysis.
