IEC 60664-1:2020 Insulation coordination for equipment within low-voltage supply systems–Part 1: Principles, requirements and tests

IEC 60664-1:2020 is the core international standard for insulation coordination of low-voltage electrical equipment (AC ≤1000 V, DC ≤1500 V, frequency ≤30 kHz). It sets out the fundamental principles, defines overvoltage classifications and withstand level criteria, and provides a unified technical framework for insulation design, testing and material selection, serving as the key compliance basis for preventing electric shock and insulation breakdown.

The standard specifies detailed technical requirements and test methods for insulation coordination, including calculation and minimum value rules for clearances and creepage distances, as well as selection and verification requirements for solid insulation, with full consideration of pollution degrees and environmental impacts. It also standardizes insulation withstand test conditions, procedures and acceptance criteria for R&D, production and certification of low-voltage equipment, and aligns with relevant standards for overvoltage and enclosure protection to form a comprehensive insulation safety system.
