UL 83:2017 STANDARD FOR SAFETY – Thermoplastic – Insulated Wires and Cables specifies the requirements for 600V single – conductor thermoplastic – insulated wires and cables. It is applicable in Canada according to CSA C22.1, in Mexico according to NOM – 001 – SEDE, and in the United States according to ANSI/NFPA 70. This standard also covers submersible – pump cables, with or without jackets.
The standard details the cable structure, including requirements for conductors (made of copper, copper – clad aluminum or aluminum), insulation, and optional nylon sheaths. It specifies various test requirements, such as aluminum conductor elongation and tensile strength tests, insulation resistance tests in high – temperature water and long – term water, flexibility tests after aging, thermal shock tests, low – temperature bending tests, and flammability and smoke emission tests. There are also requirements for cable marking, which should include the manufacturer, model, conductor specification, etc., with a spacing of no more than 610mm.
