IEC 61196-1:2005 specifies requirements for mineral – insulated cables with a rated voltage not exceeding 750 V. It applies to general wiring cables that have copper or copper – alloy sheaths and copper conductors, with rated voltages of 500 V and 750 V. A corrosion – resistant extruded outer covering can be added over the copper sheath when necessary, but it is not for the electrical insulation of the metal sheath.
The purpose of this standard is to ensure that mineral – insulated cables are safe and reliable when properly used. It defines the manufacturing requirements and characteristics of the cables, and provides methods for checking compliance with these requirements. The requirements for cable terminations are specified in IEC 60702-2.
