IEC 60079-0:2017 Explosive atmospheres — Part 0: Equipment — General requirements

IEC 60079-0:2017, Explosive atmospheres — Part 0: Equipment — General requirements, serves as the foundational international standard for electrical equipment used in explosive gas atmospheres. It defines common terminology, construction specifications, marking rules, test procedures and documentation requirements applicable to all types of explosion-protected equipment. As the overarching base standard of the IEC 60079 series, it sets fundamental safety rules to prevent ignition sources generated by electrical equipment from triggering explosions in hazardous locations.

This standard replaces the earlier edition of IEC 60079-0. It updates clauses related to equipment design, test sampling, marking and manufacturer’s quality obligations, and harmonizes general safety criteria across different explosion protection types. It governs the full lifecycle including design, manufacturing, inspection and user information for non-mining explosive gas environments, providing core evaluation criteria for type testing, product certification and on-site safety assessment in chemical, oil & gas, pharmaceutical and other industries with flammable gas mixtures.
